Patch Testing
Hair dyes contain chemicals which can cause allergic reactions in those they are applied to. Whilst these reactions are rare and often minor, the importance of patch testing prior to the application of a product to the scalp cannot be understated. I will discuss with you any requirement for a patch test at the time of your consultation and make the arrangements with you to complete the test.
What is patch testing?
Patch testing is a procedure employed by stylists to ascertain whether or not the chemical products we intend to use are likely to result in an allergic reaction in the client. Conducting a patch test is a quick and simple method of ensuring that the products I am going to apply are safe for you.
Why is patch testing important?
Patch testing is essential to ensure that the active ingredients in the products I use are unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
What does a patch test involve?
A patch test is usually conducted 48 hours prior to the application of any colour service. A small sample of the product I intend to use will be applied to the skin. If the patch test results in an allergic reaction then the product should not be applied.
Prior to the patch test I will ask you some questions to ensure that the patch test is safe to conduct. You will be provided with a form to complete to indicate that you have undertaken a patch test and are aware of the risks.
What are the risks?
The use of any chemical upon the human body presents a risk of allergic reaction. Reactions to hair dye are rare and in many cases are mild but can cause itching, burning, blistering or swelling. In rare cases, a severe reaction can lead to anaphylaxis.
What should I do if I have a reaction?
If you experience a reaction you should seek medical advice. You should also inform me so that I can discuss with you your options.
